Why Keep a Season Journal?

Relegation seasons are a blur of dread and stubborn hope. You remember the low points. You forget the small wins. A journal forces you to pause after each match and write down what actually happened and how it felt.

Common Mistakes

  • Only recording scores. A 2-1 loss where you played well feels nothing like a 2-1 loss where you were battered. Write the context.
  • Waiting until the end of the season. Your memory will smooth over the rough edges. Write while it is fresh.
  • Skipping the boring draws. A 0-0 at home during a relegation run-in tells you something about the mood at the club.
  • Ignoring the off-pitch stuff. Managerial changes, fan protests, and boardroom drama shape the season as much as results do.

How to Get the Most From This

Try to write within 24 hours of the match. Be honest about your rating. If a 3-0 win over a bottom-side team only deserves a 6 because the performance was poor, give it a 6. Use the emotion tag to track your mental state across the campaign. When you look back in May, that emotional arc will tell you more than the league table.
